Black public policy at the center of NPA's biennial summit in DC

By David M. Whettstone

This week in Washington, D.C. (January 17 and 18), Black public policy organizations come together for the first National Policy Alliance Biennial Summit entitled, “Movers and Shakers – Making Meaningful Policy.”

The purpose of the NPA Summit is to produce policy recommendations on key issues for the next President and for policymakers at all levels of government. Sessions will focus on issues such as health, housing, education, economic development, justice, and leadership development. Presidential candidates have been invited to participate in a forum on Friday morning, January 18th.

Nearly 10,000 African American elected officials and more than 3 million African American government employees serve the nation at federal, state and local levels. The Congressional Black Caucus (43 members in all) represent approximately 40 million people of every racial and ethnic group.

The importance of leveraging progress for Black communities, and ultimately the nation as a whole, through policy activities is supported by these sheer numbers alone. Policy formulations that come from this meeting will have to be effectively carried out not just by elected officials but by an active citizenry that exists in our communities.  A lot of hard work and  strategy lies ahead of us.

Member organizations of the NPA are:

Blacks in Government (BIG)

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC)

Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies

Judicial Council of the National Bar Association (NBA)

National Association of Black County Officials (NABCO)

National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBCLEO)

National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL)

National Black Caucus of School Board Members (NBCSBM)

National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM)

World Conference of Mayors (WCM)
