Imus encourages fruitless racial justice Whac-a-Mole

With new "in" thing to call for Don Imus' head on a platter for referring to Black players of the Rutgers women's basketball "nappy-headed ho's", the infamy now assigned to one bigot, may as an unforeseen consequence, take the pressure off key Black political influentials from going after the Congressional Black Caucus Institute' s partnership with the even worse Fox News Channel.

The good news is that with the DNC refusing to sanction any Fox-affiliated debates and with John Edwards having annouced his withdrawal from the debates as well, I suspect the Obama camp will be next to step up, and that, ultimately the CBCI will dissolve its cynical and (questionably) self-serving commitment with Fox.

We (and not just Blackfolk) are so easily distracted from the systemic problems that cause the high shock value examples of bigotry that turn our stomachs. We are indeed sickened, but apparently infirmed too much to go after the real culprits: the conglomerate-dominated media who chuckle while outraged civil rights groups and concerned citizens play what amounts to a racial justice version of the popular old-school arcade game, Whac-A-Mole.

So, how do we win at racial justice Whac-A-Mole? One group may think the answer lies in speed. Others say build a bigger mallet. Afro-Netizen thinks we all just need to pull the game away from the wall and cut the damn power cord! Or is this too squarely hitting the real issue on the head?

I agree with you about the distracting nature of the "storm" swirling around Don Imus' ugly little head. Like the "storm" that was swirling around Michael Richards ugly little head.

Or was that the same storm? Maybe Richards handed it off to Imus and told his good buddy to 'go long'.

Anyway, I also agree that the FOX/CBC debate issue is a bigger fish, but I also think we may be getting more worked up over that one than we need to as well. I confess I've already posted on this and made similar comments on other blogs (full disclosure here) but I think, for what it's worth, we all need to consider the fact that none of the major networks are really our great and wonderful friends, you know? As for FOX, FOX is entertainment. Not good entertainment, but entertainment. Their role is the loud-mouthed wise-ass kid in the classroom who just won't shut up because he loves the sound of his own voice and therefore thinks you should love it too. Sure, he's too big to be taken for a joke, but we'd be crazy to take him seriously. He doesn't take himself seriously. It's all about ratings.

Does this let CBC off the hook? No, I suppose it doesn't. You do have to wonder why they would choose to sleep with the ugliest girl in the whorehouse. But then, it is a whorehouse, which means just because some choices may look better than others doesn't mean you've actually got more choices.

Am I making sense? I hope so. Because here's the deal; we don't own NBC, CBS, CNN, ABC, or any of those three-letter words. We're just crumb-snatchers at all those addresses. And until we get our own address? Yeah, well...
