In a New York Daily News op/ed piece written by the 2001 Miss America first runner-up winner Faith Jenkins, the former beauty queen bemoans her lack of moral courage to have responded strongly to the question that was posed to her in the competition 6 years prior: "What do you think of rap music?"
Instead, she confesses, she shied away from addressing the question head on and distracted the interviewer by discussing adult illiteracy, poverty and high school drop-outs. Shame, shame, Ms. Jenkins.
As we all know full well today: the root cause for all of these inconveniences is rap music. So, don't listen to those fatties who think conglomerate-dominated media have more power, money and control over these vile words and images than these influential young Black rappers.
Instead, revel in the powerful subtext of Ms. Jenkins' clarion call:
Whether your long-legged, slim-waisted or perky-breasted, women and young girls must stand up proud in your swimsuits, pantyhose and high heels against the misogyny of hip hop. For it is the last remnant of socially acceptable sexism and the sole source of all evil. So, whether you participate in the Miss America pageant, junior Miss America, junior-junior Miss America, or pre-pubescent Miss America, let these pro-hourglass women movements be your international platform for speaking out for talented, conventionally beautiful women with straight-hair everywhere (but mostly America)!
Preach on, sister!

I'm going to say something a bit unpopular, but I think the straight vs natural hair issue is more of a class debate than a consciousness debate.
The women who in general have natural hair are by and large formally educated, tend to live in more integrated neighborhoods.
Women who have straightened hair tend to be in more economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
Who do you think is more conscious a black woman with a blue weave who lives in the inner city or a black woman with dreads who lives in Santa Monica?
This debate at least in Los Angeles seems more of debate along class lines than consciousness lines...
I'm not saying natural hair isn't good. I have natural hair, but I think sometimes we're being a little bit full of bs when we talk about this issue in this "we understand more" kind of way...I mean what is black culture? What is African-American culture?
I think for a black woman getting her hair pressed and curl is very much part of black culture.
I don't think the various creative hairstyles I've seen women from the certain parts of black LA have to do with anything more than trying to be creative. I truly don't think it has to do with them trying to be white, I think it has to do with them trying to be beautiful.
I mean in away isn't it more white to just let your hair be than to go through all kinds of changes to make it look fab. I mean that's the thought you have when your a kid, if my hair was straight I could just let it be, that's what white people do? So in a way couldn't that be viewed as the more "white" thing or the less conscious thing?
I'm just playing devil's advocate...and plus I've been to the projects in Watts and Compton and the women there may not have dreads or Afros, but you know they are proud women.
They are black women and I don't buy the "they are trying to be white and have self hatred" thing, just because they choose to have straightened hair. That's way too simple in my opinion.

Hair Truth vs Lie
hair straightening is lying for
black-melaninated people with flat strand hair type
so is going bald - another imposed fashion popular among black-melaninated males.
you may say people lie about thier looks all the time
but the lies black-melaninated people engage in are the same type of lying you would do if someone just murdered someone like to you and threaten to murder you if you don't do as they say.
these imposed fashions are lies to appease albinic-white people
who can't exist without compensating for their inherent subordination
by using violence and deceit to subordinate black-melaninated people
esp those with natural flat strand hair type.

She's such a tool. She has the courage to speak out now...oh god...I certainly do not blame rap music, but you know if you did think that and you're a little old black woman (ms tucker), hey I'm going to give you that.
I'm going to respect that, but for Miss Beauty Queen to come out now...yeah if it weren't for rap music they wouldn't have destroyed the wetlands in New Orleans, they wouldn't have let tens of thousands of people die in New Orleans because they didn't matter. They would have come before five days when people were dying...yeah there wouldn't have been slavery or jim crow or a high unemployment rate among African-Americans...they wouldn't have humiliated women who didn't have papers and made them milk their breasts while they called them cows to prove that they truly did have young children at home (the raids on hard working people at the Michael Bianco Factory...), we wouldn't be in Iraq, people wouldn't be on their third freakin' tour in Iraq, even though they are only the National Guard...yeah all that, that's all rap musics fault.
Faith is from Lousiana so I guess when the blew up the levees in New Orleans in 1927 so that the rich people could live and the poor black people and whites could die...that was all because of rap music.
Oh I forgot rap music has only been around since the 1980s, that other stuff must have been evil jazz music's fault.

I see your point. Well said. Instead of reading current events, the attorney should read just a bit of history. It might her brain with pattern mapping and recognizing the economics behind this.
