Brother Gordon will inevitably move on to greater things, leaving Julian and NAACP at a tremendous loss of stewardship. Bruce is positioned to become a major player during ongoing '08 Presidential Campaign. Thanks.

I was very saddened to learn of Bruce Gordon's resignation, however, I suspected it was related to internal issues. Mr. Gordon possesses a great deal of corporate and community acumen that the NAACP desperately needs and that is why the average African-American family DOES NOT own a membership! Much like many churches in our community, the same "social club" mentality pervades the NAACP hence rendering the organization ineffective. The first clue of the NAACP's failure to embrace our needs was the refusal of the board to change the "C" in NAACP from "colored" to "B" for "Black" or "A" for African-American. This organization was established to address the political, economical and judicial of African-Americans (or Blacks) not other ethnic groups / races, especially since those other groups have and continue to put into place the resources they need without any consideration for the African-American Community.
Finally, I hope Mr. Gordon will develop an independent organization (preferrably "For Profit") with the disgruntled NAACP members cancelling their membership and joining Mr. Gordon's organization in order to address the issues on his own terms.

In 1934, Dr. Dubois resigned from the NAACP and the Crisis for reasons similar to Mr. Gordons'. The Board has always been quixotic in its policy initiatives. Since the founding of the NAACP, it has struggled with the question of self definition and Black liberation: what is more effective, assimilation or Black self worth. DuBois argued that Black people had innate value independent of American identity. Others on the Board did not see it that way. They won out and DuBois left. On the Board now are conservative Black Republicans, liberal integrationists, moderate centrists and plain old opportunists. You would be hard pressed to find a voice for liberation on that Board today. The NAACP is a very conservative organization committed to assimilation and the reaping of the benefits of the American dream. It does not advocate valuing the weight of the suffering of Black people for something other than a piece of the American pie. In other words, the NAACP sees the struggles of Black folk as valueless in the context of the process of creating different American values. We have no value other than reparations for our suffering or rewards for our assimilative agility. It is a sad organization. It is going no where and will continue to eat its own tail. Such an organization hates change. It feeds of mediocrity and pretension. It fights for nothing except the illusion of the end of suffering. It advocates for nothing other than digestible crumbs from the master's table. No person can ever run the NAACP. Mr. Gordon is just the latest in a long chain to come.

One of the realities of a non-profit, tax exempt organization is that the board proposes and the executive disposes. Very "corporate" of Mr. Gordon indeed, to presume that he and he alone, could act as he pleased in the name of the NAACP and that the role of the governing (read financially and leagally responsible)board was simply that of rubber stamping and approving his actions after the fact. He was certainly correct about one thing: there was serious mis-alignment between his personal agenda and that of the governing board and mission of our country's oldest and most venerable civil rights organization.

As the head goes, so goes the rest of the body. I now understand why the local NAACP branch I dealt with was/is so ineffective. There is a need for leadership that has been trained in how to effectively run a business, and apparently the people in charge at the NAACP have been there too long and don't know what they don't know. Gordon obviously tried to have an organization that is about more than paying lip service (advocacy) to a few African-American problems, and the old party line just isn't having it. The people deserve an NAACP that is visionary and understands how to work effectively in todays world. That means proactively undertaking initiatives that directly affect our people's lives, and maybe even sitting down and talking to the "opposition" once in a while to open channels of communication to persuade and find concensus on matters that are important to us, rather than screaming about what the NAACP doesn't like and calling for yet another ineffective march or boycott. Mr. Gordon's memo did us all a favor in shining the light on why the NAACP is obsolete.

The outline provided in Mr. Gordons letter serves as a perfect example of how many "Black" organizations have become stagnant and in most instances irrelevant. Hindered by money grubs and media whores who could care less about the cause, the NAACP will remain in a time capsule without the leadership of people like Mr. Gordan. Its sickening.

In light of Mr. Gordon's resignation, and the various points regarding differences between the board and him, I am disappointed in the NAACP. They had an opportunity to become more than they have been of late with his leadership. The NAACp and that 60 member board is rediculous! Julian Bond needs to be removed since he appears to be a power hungry idiot!
