Some of these other non-black groups do not even support some of the black business in existence just like you said, SisterMalcolm. They pimp us, our image, and just about everything else and then talk about how supposedly superior they are to us. Like you, I hope we stop supporting some-SOME- of these people along with some of the questionable black business. Alexis, I can understand your questioning of the products, but the economic issues it address are applicable to other areas of black economic life.

meka

Also, alot of non-black groups do not even accept the business of other groups in their enclaves. Part of this stems from some justifiable and understandable protectionism and survival, but if this state of affairs is fine for non-black groups, who are you all to be that quick to overcomplain
about us trying to recapture some of our own market in our own communities. Admittedly, the economic problems in the black community are both caused by external and internal factors, and that some blacks should reconsider their biases and mistakes, but non-black groups are not blameless for the state of affairs in these communities. Also, SisterMalcolm I do see where you are coming from with the things you say we need to do to get stronger along with the mistakes we make. I must also add, that some of the people that complain about outside control of business are some of the main ones that don't support black business(although some of these businesses must step up their game as much as non-black businesses.

meka

For what it is worth, other groups "complain and wimp as much if not more" than black people and use their own issues or cards. Nothing has to be put on race for the simple fact that much is based on race. For the white people on this site if you think you would handle things better, why did you put up a fuss when Japanese overcompeted in fixing cars at white owned corporations and threatened some of your jobs. For the Latinos on this site, when Americans plant corporations in Latino lands without compensation, low pay, and bad treatment it is called imperialism. They do their carping and complaining to the point that a bigoted person would want to assume that they take no internal responsibility for the condition of their country. Alot of the documentary covered Korean competition on the market but it also talked about what blacks need to do to build their economic infrastructure. Which is partly why black business is increasing. Just something to think about, depending on the business you have, you have no way of knowing if part of your clientele are drug dealers, pimps, rapist, and pedophiles and you risk losing business from other people by possibly unfairly profiling. You don't know anything about people by looking at them and if this is a suttle dis at black people, know that you probably have just as many of these shady types in your group as well, whether some of them act sophisticated or not.

SisterMalcolm

"The San Ra, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis generation did not beg ever, they only demand liberty.
Now we are the master of our own destiny we start to beg."

BEG for what? Koreans don't even LIKE Black people. Most think that Black people are an inferior race and will profit off of them or Mexicans anyway that they can.

This is a historical truth.

I once went into a mall where there was some beautiful Black figurines and art work being sold at a kiosk. Imagine my surprise when two Indian people asked me if I needed help.

It's like being at a slave auction. You can see the watchful disrespect in these people's eyes. They don't want to live anywhere near you or have their children bring you over----if if you are in the same tax bracket as they.

Black people continue to put their dollars into the hands of people who take the money outside of their communities, thus continually enriching OTHERS who do not even see you as their equals.

Black people point to other groups who are making it in spite of where they come from. Do Black people ever wonder why THEY are helping these OTHER people by continually handing over their hard earned dollars to them?

I say that now that we are "masters" of our own "destiny" we buy it from "others." Others who sneer at us while at the same time pimping us and our image.

Alexis

While I commend the young journalist for her research and passion, I am not concerned that Korean-owned beauty supply stores may be taking business from Black-owned beauty supply stores. The outrage, for me, is that women of African descent are still putting carcinogenic relaxers in their hair and gluing or sewing straight or wavy weaves into their hair in an attempt to assimilate Eurocentric beauty standards.

Joanne

Why does everything come down to race, these people are obviously filling a demand in the market, that the Black African American has created. Good on them for using there business savy and filling a niche.
The only time I would ever not use someones business is if I knew they were hardened criminals, such as drug dealers, rapists, pedophiles, of if they sold inferior product, or the price wasnt right.
For gods sake lets stop putting everything down to race,, this sort of petty crap is the reason this topic keeps going round and round and round,,,,,,,,,we are all human beings out there trying to make a living, lets support the "HUMAN RACE" what a novel idea that would be for a change.....

Deocliciano Okssipin Vieira

Isn´t America a market driven country?
Its a capitalist world!.
If we cannot develop our own business there would be those who can.
It is just stupid to only buy a think thinking only on the superficial things of the seller, than on your own economy.

I think this generation of Afro-Americans wimps to much.
The San Ra, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis generation did not beg ever, they only demand liberty.
Now we are the master of our own destiny we start to beg.
