Stanley "Tookie" Williams, Co-Founder of the Crips, Faces Execution In December

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A judge has set a Dec. 13 execution date for Crips co-founder Stanley "Tookie" Williams, rejecting his attorneys' request for more time to prepare a clemency appeal for the convicted murderer and Nobel Prize nominee.

"This case has taken over 24 years to get to this point," said Superior Court Judge William R. Pounders, who signed Williams' death warrant Monday. "That is a long delay in itself and I would hate to add to that delay."

Williams, 51, was sentenced to death in 1981 for fatally shooting Albert Owens, a Whittier convenience store worker. He also was convicted of killing two Los Angeles motel owners and their daughter during a robbery.

Williams, who has maintained his innocence, has written a series of children's books disavowing gang violence during his years on Death Row. He has been nominated five times for a Nobel Prize for peace and four times for a Nobel Prize for literature.

His lawyers had requested that Pounders schedule his execution in San Quentin prison's death chamber for Dec. 22 to give them more time to craft their clemency request. The Dec. 13 execution date means they have until Nov. 8 to submit clemency papers to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Pounders said Williams' lawyers could ask the governor for more time to tell him about the good work Williams has done since renouncing his gang past.

In August, Williams received a President's Call to Service Award for his good deeds on Death Row, complete with a letter from President Bush praising him for demonstrating "the outstanding character of America."

Last year, Jamie Foxx played Williams in "Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story," a television movie that prompted thousands of e-mail messages to Williams from young gang members who said his story helped them turn their lives around.

Williams and a high school friend, Raymond Washington, organized the Crips street gang in Los Angeles in 1971.

Lora Owens, Albert Owens' stepmother, said Williams does not deserve clemency.

"I didn't convict the man and I didn't put a death sentence on him, but I want justice for Albert to be done. I will not let it go," she said in a recent telephone interview.

Dozens of death penalty opponents held a quiet demonstration Monday outside the courtroom. They held a banner praising Williams' work to prevent gang violence that read, "Keeping him alive saves lives!"

Among the demonstrators was actor Mike Farrell, who called the proceedings "disgusting."

"It's a simple, sterile, ministerial procedure in which a human life is scheduled to be expunged without consideration for his value, his change, his transformation," Farrell said.

I am not familar with the whole case, but what I have heard, and read I think that no matter how many books he has written, he started the crips and it will always be here wether he is dead or alive, but every time someone dies by the hands of a crip, he might as well have done it his self, almost like an accessory after the fact. This is possibly the most ignorant response I've ever read. First, Mr. Williams has not apologized in the slightest for what he did. Second, life in prison? I'm sure given the chance, the poeple he killed would trade *life* in prison for the miserable death's Mr. Williams gave them. There are things far worse than life in prison...

Mr. Williams brainchild - the crips - is a very, very coercive group. They have not dedicated their lives to making life easier on non-crips members. If you are stupid enough to become a crip, then recognize your mistake and try to get out, well good frickin luck. You are dead meat.

The world would be best off had Stanley "Tookie" Williams never been born. He slaughtered at least four unarmed people and bragged about the gory details while laughing about it.

Mr. Williams has never admitted his guilt. Some of you think this means he is not guilty. Some of you seem to think that no black man can receive justice in our system. You don't seem to realize that the vast majority of crimes committed against black people are perpetrated by other black people.

We are killing ourselves in great numbers thanks to people like Tookie Williams. And if there is ever a "Black Hall of Shame" created Tookie Williams will have a place among the top ten people to have committed unforgiveable crimes against American black people.

I am not a supported of the death penalty. But I am a supporter of the rule of law. Mr. Williams has received more than a fair trial and was legally sentenced to die. Many appeals of his have been denied - even by the outrageously liberal 9th circuit court.

Also, it is not a big accomplishment to be nominated for a Nobel prize. Any academic (teacher or professor), librarian, or selected others can nominate someone for no reason whatsoever. Being nominated means little or nothing as the nomination process is rife with those abusing it to prop up lame political causes and attempt to gain visibility for many times idiotic causes.

Mr. Williams has sold a total of well under 500 books. That does not jive with his fans who state how many hundreds of thousands (or is it millions today?) that Mr. Williams has "saved".

A reply above says that all the members of his/her family are crips, but Mr. Williams "saved" a cousin from the same fate. I don't think this person realizes the incredible irony that his statement presents. Had Mr. Williams not created the crips, most of this man's family would not be members and his cousin would never have had to be saved!

And to those who oh so righteously state that it is always wrong to kill and only God can do so, please explain how you rationalize killing in self defense. Had any of Mr. Williams victims been armed they might have been able to kill him in an act of clear self defense. Had that happened should they then have been tried for killing him?

No civilized society ever has said it was wrong to kill in defense of self of in defense of other people. Killing someone is not always wrong. It is always avoidable, and if done in true self defense or defense of the lives of others, then it is the fault of the person killed.

Should the men who drug the poor black man to death behind their truck a few years ago if/when they ever get some celebs and publicity hounds stating they have "turned their lives around" and are now "helping others" with their books about avoiding dragging people to death, have their sentences (I honestly do not know what their sentences are) commuted ala Mr. Williams?

And one more thing. Those of you saying that 20 years is enough to pay for killing four people, is that five years per person killed, or do you discount those of Asian descent?

Tookie was found guilty of murdering 4 people. Those 4 people were not shown mercy by this person. He has not admitted to the killings and therefore, has not taken responsibility for his actions. You morons who state 'god' can only judge are ripe for this kind of 'free Tookie' nonsense. Black leaders often enter the fray when a high profile black man is facing legal issues. It is quite interesting how they seem to see only one side of the issue and appear quite racist themselves. It is quite easy for Tookie to 'change' and renounce his old ways when impending execution stares him straight in the face. If he truly feels as he has said, he would indeed 'snitch' on other Crips members, he would indeed take responsibility for his crimes, and he would indeed separate himself from the Crips completely. He should rot and if the good governor has any sense of justice, the murderer gets his long overdue sleep.

"In any country, prison is where society sends its failures; but in this country society itself is failing." Who created this society we live in-need I say more. Here are a few points to remember:
1)We live in a society where slavery has existed for nealry 400 years despite emancipation in 1865.
2)We live in a society where for 100 years after slavery's abolishment, it was law to LYNCH blacks for being black.
3)We live in a society where ONLY 40 years have passed since WE were granted Civil Rights.
4)We live in a society where WE are considered TERRIOST for fighting for OUR RIGHTS! Look at what J.Edgar Hoover did to the Panthers.

5) REMEMBER LATASHA HARLINS-15 year old gunned down over a bottle of juice!!! Her Murderer walked FREE. This made it an underline rule that if you suspect someone BLACKS of stealing "SHOOT THEM, you will get off."

What is the problem with this whole situation? The law did not care about the formation of the CRIPS. Violence is Violence. My point is it is ok for

Convicted murders are not put on death row to "change their lives" or "make the world a better place". They are put there to wait their turn to die for the killing that they have done. It simply does not make any difference what he has done or not done while waiting to die. Becuase that is all he there to do. It is very easy to live a clean "good" life on death row. He can't do anything else put hang in his cell and think of ways to beat his rap. He also did not actully write those books. They were written by a woman who used his name as a co-author to help sell the books and get them noticed. Anyone can claim to be up for a Nobel Peace Prize. Since those records are sealed for 50 years it can not be proven otherwise. Tookie took away all those 4 people had or ever would have. There are NO second chances for them. There are NO TV movies being made about them. Not to mention the fact that once you are a crip you can never be a noncrip untill you are dead. He has been calling the shots and giving orders right out of his death row cell for all these years. It will never be truly known how many lives he has had ended and destroyed. Just because he says he hasn't been doing that just isn't good enough for me. If he gets clemancy and gets put into genral population in prison he will be a "hero" to the other cons inside. He will be living like a king. Then I'm sure the next rallys will be about how he needs to be free because some woman put his name on her books. You want this guy living on your block? What's that? Yeah! I didn't think so. It is rather amazing though how he has played all these thousands of people. He tells his sad little story and pulls the strings and then just sits back and watchs them do their little dance. He has been alive for far to long as it is. Lets put this dog to sleep and move on to something worthy of our attention.
