California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown is the daughter of sharecroppers. And the American people are supposed to do what with this information exactly?
Are we to make certain assumptions about a Black woman whose parents labored within the harsh post-slavery servitude of the Jim Crow South? And if so, what assumptions should we be forming based on the GOP's media blitz hyping this aspect of Justice Brown's family history?
Are Republicans playing the "racial authenticity card"? Is the GOP's message: "Look, America, Justice Brown comes from humble beginnings, so don't let those liberal Blackfolk fool you, she's genuinely Black!" Well, if this is their jaded and simplistic approach to influencing public opinion in favor of her confirmation as a federal judge this coming week, then how does this jibe with Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice's middle-class background?
So, who's playing "class warfare" here?
The GOP consistently accused the Democrats of this tactic during the 2004 election -- particularly former Kerry running-mate Sen. John Edwards with his "two Americas" stump speech. Maybe the Republican leadership should have made a caveat to this attack by admonishing Democrats from playing the "class card" with white voters, thus making people of color fair game for both parties.
The same tactic was used in the confirmation battle for now Justice Clarence Thomas -- an equally unqualifed and self-loathing Black jurist who has made a fruitful career out of tilling and shilling for his conservative benefactors.
Brown, Thomas, Rice (and let's not forget Colin Powell) are disappointing successors -- if not disgraces -- to their forbearers regardless of their respective families' stations in life because among the sacrifices they made for their own uplift were the values and dreams of fairness, access and opportunity that have sustained Black people for generations.
Nevertheless, these influential and voluntary sharecroppers for the right wing will reap what they sow. And only hope for Justice Brown is that what she reaps in her Frist-led shuffle towards federal judgeship is as rotten as her judicial record and the ultra-conservative ideology from which it has been cultivated.

Extreme partisanship may be the death of our democracy. The reality is both Democrats and Republicans want activists judges on the bench, as long as they're advocating for their agenda. I am personally troubled by Justice Brown's seemingly regressive views on Affirmative-Action and Workers' Rights, but that's because my own bias leads me to side with those who historically have had the least advantage and power. I believe my bias is ethical, but those with opposing views can make the same claim, which is why we have to have a balance of power. Thank God, the Republicans were not able to drop "the nuclear option" and destroy the filibuster.

Celebrate being black , celebrate life, but celebrate judges with poor judicial records who happen to be black... ...to question authority sounds like a standard every judge should held to. Because brown is black she shouldn't be scrutinized?
Libertarians- zero sum totals, none of their policies are applicable over an amount of time and show success.
Against Taxes? Try running things without them. If you don't need to be taxed then don't drive on public streets.
Brown being placed over the DC district is the final straw, a city with a minority population being overseen by someone with corporate values at her core when the place may soon have elected Reps and Senators there. No- she will rule against the people her record shows it and they need a new Diebold target to take over votes with.
Sharecroppers daughter is interesting , she isn't the only person to have that background. Bush is making the nation into sharecroppers and odd-jobs people again.
The numbers don't lie. Record job loss, record poor, massive uninsured totals, unfunded mandates... Brown makes all this okay because she's black. her philosophy is the same as that of Bush and it's why she was turned down once already.

Add HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson to your list. When adding him to the cabinet, GW made plenty sure to mention that he grew up poor and black in Texas. Now, Jackson is overseeing the dismantling of many of HUD's housing programs for the poor.
"Poor is just a state of mind," Jackson once told a Senate committee reviewing HUD's budget, which proposed deep, deep cuts in programs that help the poorest of the poor in the U.S.

The simple fact is,
that any black who holds to a conservative world-view is then marked as an Uncle Tom.
Why the fear of black conservatives?
Not to mention that in this particular case, Justice Brown is far closer to being libertarian than to being conservative.
She is opposed because she is a black woman who does not hold to the liberal agenda.
Cowards all.
Instead of taking her on idea for idea, she is just labeled as the hard work of actually demoonstrating the liberal claims against her can then be shurged off.
