NO DIGNITY, NO RESPECT!
Msg To Racist U.S. Media Below..
U.S. Media Racism Towards Africa:

PBS/Npr: NewsHour Aids Piece: 06-28-06. But, All U.S. Media Uses This Tactic, No Matter What The Story On Africa.

..Sent To NewsHour And Other Media.
Millions don`t like to see a south-east Indian going around pointing out the warts in Africa: until we see the reverse. When will, and why don`t we ever see a Black man going around
India only talking about its poor, hungry, Aids, and its-illiterates! (or china/asia} Stop your racist tactic of only doing negative pieces or stories on Africa!.. South Africa Doesn't count. (For some reason you exclude South Africa from your demeaning tactic: why?) ..And now you use Indians or alike that have benefited from Black inventions, engineers and genius, over the two hundred plus years of U.S. History to advance your racism! India, China Asia were still very primitive places back then when
U.S. Blacks or American Africans were helping to invent the technology in the U.S. that would change the world and pull them out of ignorance. So excuse Black America and other decent people that detest your demeaning of Africa, distorting
of the truth psychologically, and your exportation of our U.S.
racism around the world! (And using others to do it)
..Blacks Must Put An End To This!!

As a white guy (well Jewsish to be more exact) who grew up in a primarily African-American community (Germantown- Philly) I have to take issue with what you're saying, at least in part. My experiences growing up were that both sides segregate themselves (as do all cultures and people). When I was young- lets say under 12- almost all of my good friends were black. But once we got to high-school it was no longer permissable (or really that safe) for my friends to hang with "the white boy" (or "whitey" or "Cracker" or whatever). I couldn't walk through my own god-damned neighborhood without getting harrased, rolled on, robbed, etc. And so, as I got a little older, I started to hang with the other SW G-town white boys (there were 4 of us), and we banded together against what became a more and more hostile environment.

Now- this was during the height of the crack epidemic, and I know that many of the black kids who lived in G-Town had many of the same problems (getting jumped, robbed, etc). But- it was impossible to escape from the fact that our whiteness made us extra enticing targets. Wherever we went, it was whitey this and that. And wherever I went I had to prove that I wasn't some soft-ass bitch- cause all white people are soft, right?

I'm not trying to equate the discrimination I felt growing up as a white kid in a black neighborhood with the discrimination felt by African-Americans each and every day in this nation, I understand the broader context and am fully aware of the different power dynamics at work (and as a Jew I also know a bit about having my people shit upon by everyone in shitting distance). But to say that only one side is self selecting with whom they choose to socialize with is just plain wrong(I mean Jews are discriminated against everywhere they go- and a good deal of them would prefer not to talk to anyone else), and by acting like your shit don't stink (aw, you ate with white people at a German restaurant- how enlightened! Way to reach out to those goofy white people!) you're just going to push away people who you may find to be very strong allies in ALL of your battles.

Thanks for this long piece, and for taking the time to interact with these folks and then write it up.

I'm a white guy who has been thinking about these issues for 30+ years, and tried a few things. There are some basics that I frequently recommend to white folks.
1) consistently subscribe to media produced by people of color. I have subscribed to one or another local African-American newspaper since the late 70s, and have learned a hell of a lot. Now you and Black Commentator and others are providing a similar resource.
2) Cross the race line in the most natural way you can. I'm a writer, and interested in community news, so in Richmond VA in 1981 I volunteered to work at a community newspaper where everyone else was Black. If you play chess, play chess with people of color who play chess. If you are a churchgoer, ditto. You will be welcome if you go somewhere that you have a reason to be, and you won't be as nervous if there's activity there you understand already.
3) Racism is indeed, as Ebony noted back in the 60s, a white problem. Find some way to take on the beliefs and ignorance we white folks are raised with. I belong to CURE, a group of white folks supporting reparations (www.reparationsthecure.org). Most major faith denominations have some kind of anti-racist action network.
4) Make alliances. The NAACP may seem like a stodgy oldline organization, but quite likely in your community they are fighting a little nasty brushfire of racism even as we speak. It sure would be nice if some white person wrote a letter to the editor backing them up.

Chris,

I'm the white guy who "seemed to get it" a little that you were talking to. I've posted a response to your post here: http://jamespoling.blogspot.com/2005/02/leaving-ones-comfort-zone-response-to.html

Feel free to check it out.

WOW!

Chris, I am absolutely shocked by this. I am soooo blogging about this. This is what has been absolutely bothering me about these power bloggers. And I am appalled this conference was put up in NYC and neither me, nor Latino Pundit or Prometheus were invited or even asked who to invite so it would not have looked like you were filling up a quota.

Stupid. Absolutely stupid.

James Harris

Chris,

This is one of your best post yet. Your right on point. Keep up the GREAT work.

James
