The big story is the return of Cynthia McKinney to the U.S. Congress. Voters of the 4th District gave her the nod with 51 per cent of the vote, with a majority of the votes counted. Early Tuesday morning, opponents Liane Levetan and Cathy Woolard were still neck and neck for second place, and hoping to be the one to meet McKinney in runoff on Aug. 10.
McKinney will face Republican Candidate Catherine Davis in the fall, but is favored to win the heavily Democratic District. Denise Majette, the former 4th District Congresswoman who resigned to seek the U.S. Senate seat, is in a runoff for the seat with political newcomer Cliff Oxford. The winner of this race will face Republican Johnny Isakson in November. Isakson gave up his 6th District seat to seek the U.S. Senate seat.
At the State Supreme Court level, Justice Leah Sears soundly beat back a challenge backed by Gov. Sonny Perdue's candidate Grant Brantley. She will become the first woman chief justice of the state's high court. She already set two records by becoming the first woman and the youngest member of that court.
Locally, all the women judges in Fulton County Superior Court races were re-elected: Judges Bennsonetta Tipton Lane, Gail Tusan and Wendy Schoob. And DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones was handily re-elected over six challengers.
A runoff will be held to determine the next president of the Atlanta City Council between Lisa Borders and Michael Julian Bond. The seat was vacated when Woolard resigned to run for Congress. And city residents, who will welcome the help to pay for the $3 billion worth of infrastructure improvements mandated by the court, passed the city's water and sewer sales tax.
